Among the sins named that will prevent people from entering heaven is the sin of drunkenness. This is clearly spelled out in the Corinthian passage, which we have referenced in past articles. Let us again look at this grave warning: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God, 1 Cor. 6:9-10. The havoc that the consumption of alcohol has wreaked on humanity is staggering. Murder, rape, child abuse, and spousal abuse are often the result of this habit forming drug. Terrible car crashes resulting in death and serious injury often times occur while drivers are under the influence of alcohol. The one who drinks and drives may walk away without devastating physical injuries, while killing and maiming the innocent. However, he or she, has many years to lament their crime when they become sober, often from their jail cell. Some say, I don’t drink to become intoxicated; I only drink socially. You should know that when you take that first drink you are playing with fire. The first drink begins to reduce one’s reasoning power. Inhibitions are lowered and judgment begins to be impaired. The first drink usually calls for another. When one becomes a Christian one should give up the drinking of alcohol. The Christian is admonished to be sober minded. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, 1Thess. 5:5-8. The Apostle Peter wrote For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries, 1 Pet. 4:3. Christian beware! Drinking alcohol is dangerous and will cause many to forfeit their heavenly reward.
